In the last two weeks of the 2020 election cycle, the Super PAC Americans for Accountability in Leadership has begun placing illegal robocalls and running ads opposing Audrey Denney with blatant and absurd lies and appear to be in violation of Federal Election Commission laws on coordination between campaigns and independent expenditure Super PACs. In a bold move disregarding ethics rules, Rep. LaMalfa’s long-time campaign treasurer and campaign advisor, David Bauer occupies the same treasurer role in the Super PAC running these advertisements. The FEC makes it clear that there is to be no coordination between the campaign and this group, and having a treasurer that shares roles between the two make the required boundaries impossible to maintain.
Congressman Doug LaMalfa’s (R-Richvale) campaign is no stranger to attacking his opponents through illegal or unethical means and is well-known in California’s First District as a candidate who regularly perpetuates lies and misinformation when faced with a challenger.
Rep. LaMalfa has spent two cycles making unfounded and absurd claims about Audrey Denney (D-Chico), which included using Photoshop to falsify documents with Audrey’s signature that were mailed out to district voters. Long-time LaMalfa treasurer, David Bauer, and his associated campaigns have been fined for violating public reporting requirements. LaMalfa’s current Chief of Staff, Mark Spannagel, was rewarded with his current job for 2012 campaign behavior that was in clear violation of ethics rules.
Denney stated, “This kind of corruption is exactly why so many Americans have become jaded by their government. The Congressman’s blatant disregard for the rules and laws that govern campaigning is a symptom of a much bigger problem that his eighteen years in office make apparent: Rep. LaMalfa does not embody the values of integrity, transparency, and accountability to the people he has sworn to serve. I have spent three years running an honest campaign to end this kind of corruption, and I have done so with support from the real people of California’s First District. Rep. LaMalfa is displaying the worst kind of campaign behaviors, and while this isn’t a surprise to most of us, the people of the North State deserve better.”
