Although another party was on tap for the July 2019 Nevada County Democrats First Tuesday Educational Forum, we were lucky to have Elizabeth Betancourt, candidate for the CA AD1 (Assembly District) available to introduce herself and field questions from attendees. Also, we were equally fortunate to have the always welcome Shelley Covert and her band play later in the evening.
Elizabeth is running for the California State Assembly, 1st District, a seat vacated by Brian Dahle who is now the State Senator for the same district. She is one of five candidates running, and the only Democrat.
Elizabeth works for the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board and is particularly skilled in cannabis permitting. She is also a farmer along with her husband in Happy Valley (an unincorporated community in Shasta County)
The main areas of focus Elizabeth brings to her campaign are 1) increasing rural residents’ participation in state government, 2) forest management in relation to fire prevention and 3) access to healthcare for rural areas.
In the question/answer period at this First Tuesday event, folks asked numerous questions but, no surprise, were especially interested in fire prevention and forest health. The responses from Elizabeth were thorough and it was obvious she knew the subject well. In fact, Elizabeth impressed people so much that a challenge given to the group to raise $1000 for her campaign at this event was easily met and significantly exceeded by at least $600 ($1600).
The election for the Assembly seat is August 27th, ballots are going out during the week of July 29th. Let’s elect a Democrat to the Assembly AD 1 for the first time in as long as anyone can remember. Vote Elizabeth Betancourt on Aug 27th!
Thanks to Elizabeth for making the trip down to Grass Valley and thanks, as always, to Shelley Covert and friends for their moving and danceable music.
