Benjamin Franklin allegedly remarked around the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence that, “We must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall hang separately.” He was referring to the original colonies, but he might as well have been referring to our present chaotic political state.
If Democrats, Progressive Republicans, Independents and other like-minded Americans want to oust Trump, they’re going to need to stick together and not demand their individual “ideal candidates.” There is no such person; waiting for the perfect candidate is a never-ending prospect. As we have seen in the recent past, refusing to support a Presidential candidate who doesn’t “tic all the boxes” is a recipe for disaster. It is critical for intelligent progressive voters to look beyond gender, color, sexual orientation and age and focus on what truly counts. Competency, dignity and an ability to unify are the means to rid this country of our current excuse for a leader. These attributes supersede everything else in this critical election cycle.
Trump and his base of true believers are counting on the liberal side to splinter. If this proves true, a disastrous Trump second term is a very real possibility.
