CONGRATULATIONS FOR BEING A PART OF OUR BLUE WAVE!

By Margie Joehnck and Ben Perkins

Together, we’ve defeated the Republican Majority in the House of Representatives and seen incredible gains in state and local government for Democrats across the country, and right here in Nevada County!

At the state level, all of our constitutional officers, from the Governor’s Mansion to the Comptroller’s Office, were re-elected. Democrats have won a strong super-majority in both houses of the California legislature.

We’ve shown that Californians continue to stand up together and confront the challenges of our time: climate change, wealth inequality, healthcare, immigration, and corruption in our nation’s politics.

There were also some tough losses. Audrey Denney, despite her own and our tireless work, is not joining this Congress’s freshman class. Our congressional district remains a very tough one for Democrats. However, she has pushed us closer to victory.  In 2014, we received 39% of CD1’s vote; in 2016, 40.9%; and this year, thanks to  all of you, Audrey closed the gap even further, earning 45% of votes cast in CD1. 2020 victory is closer than ever, and Democrats will continue to fight for honest, progressive representation in this district.

In the Truckee Tahoe area seven members of our 185-member strong Tahoe-Truckee Democratic Club were elected to office. Morgan Godwin, Anna Klostad and David Polivy were elected to the Truckee Town Council and Christa Finn beat the incumbent to win a seat on the Truckee Donner PUD. Three members were also elected to the boards that are in Placer County.

Our own county continues to get bluer: Caleen Sisk received 36.7% districtwide, but received 50.4% on Nevada County. We also supported Bob Branstrom for Grass Valley City Council and Bruce Herring for NID Division 2. Although they didn’t win, both men are excellent candidates and ran professional level campaigns.  We hope they will continue pursuing their dreams and we can support them again.

Together, though, we have scored some impressive victories.

Ricki Heck campaigned so effectively that she discouraged anyone from challenging her in NID Division 1. Kathryn Wanamaker was successfully appointed without opposition to the Nevada County School Board, as was Cindy Latimer to the Bear River Recreation and Parks District.

Hilary Hodge carried the momentum, strength, and organization of her supervisor campaign into a Grass Valley City Council win, and Erin Minett won a tough race for Nevada City Council thanks to tireless campaigning.

Teresa Eckerling, Penn Valley School District, and Jeanne Michael, Grass Valley School District, both received the highest number of votes in the elections for their school board seats. Laurie Peters, a candidate for the Placer County NID seat, and supported by many Nevada County Democrats, was successful in her race as well.

Throughout these last two years, the Nevada County Democratic Central Committee has worked to encourage and train potential Democratic candidates and to elect those who stepped up through additional training and consulting, establishing a high visibility office in downtown Grass Valley, providing funds, organizing to hang door hangers, make phone calls, managing, and sharing our data management system.

Many central committee members along with countless other local Democrats and “left-leaners” spent time knocking on doors, tabling at the GV Thursday night markets, the Nevada County fair and local shopping areas, marching with our candidates in the two parades, 4thof July and Constitution Day, sign waving, texting, and posting on social media sites.

There is still a lot of work to do, and many opportunities for those who are ready to step up for our county. 1. I too join you all in providing some of the finest political strategy in the North State. Nevada and Butte counties are the two counties we Democrats can count on helping our candidates cross the finish line on Election Day. Now, we must put a great deal of effort into several counties in the northern end of CD1, SD1 and AD1; those being Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama counties. The key is increased voter registration of Democrats, otherwise a Democratic candidate will not win. See you on the campaign trail in 2019. I will continue to call for a targeted voter registration plan for the aforementioned counties.

  2. now get rid of Doug LaMalfa who has bilked the taxpayers out of millions for his family business.

    Elect Audrey Denny
