Nevada County Democrats have been building momentum and it’s paying off. Our BBQ on August 7th was sold out with over 330 people attending. A statewide candidate, Fiona Ma, and our congressional candidate, Audrey Denney, both inspired and amused the gathering. Both candidates have big futures in California politics.
In spite of the substantial odds in overcoming an incumbent, we had one of two endorsed candidates win in June, Erin Minett, who won a council seat by just three votes. (Yes! Every vote matters). The second candidate, Hilary Hodge, was only narrowly defeated and is now running for GV City Council – talk about determination, resilience, and a deep desire to serve one’s community!
Three more Democrats will be “Appointed in lieu of election” meaning no one ran against them: Ricki Heck for NID 1, Cindy Latimer for Bear River Recreation and Parks, and Kate Wanamaker for the County Board of Education.
We’ve successfully run trainings for prospective candidates and volunteers who may want to work on campaigns, as well as a training about what it’s like to serve on a board. In other words we’re reaching out to find talented Democrats to help us imbue governance throughout Nevada County with Blue Values.
Our store front office in Grass Valley has attracted new volunteers, along with plenty of people simply walking in to get information or offer encouragement. This is the first time we’ve rented high visibility space to help promote voter turn-out and provide candidate support for the whole election cycle from April to November.
The bottom line in any election is quite simply this – when Democrats all vote we can win. The huge challenge is getting all of our team into the game. In this coming election, given our new voting system wherein everyone gets a mail ballot, it will be easier than ever for people to get their ballots in. So, the thing that every single Democrat can do is support other Democrats to get their ballots filled out and turned in. It will also make our Turn Out the Vote efforts go faster and smoother (and potentially save you some phone calls) if we get our ballots in early.
Note: Our website will provide a one-stop location to get information on all endorsed local and state Democratic candidates and ballot measures (11 measures so far).
Vote early! And encourage your friends to do the same. Volunteer if you can.
Nothing happens by itself, so let’s make a Blue Wave happen!
