 Nevada County Democratic Central CommitteeFebruary 19, 2010 MinutesBriar Patch Community Room    

Attendance:  Sharon Rose, Pat Wynne, Carol Kuczora, Bill Toensing, Jim Firth, Susan Pelican, Howard Beeman, Kent Clark, Frank Way, Margie Joehnck, Joan Field, Gail Allinson, David Olsen, Shanti Emerson and Clint and Jody Curtis. 

 

1.  At 630 PM, the meeting was called to order by Pres. Margie and the Pledge of Allegiance was invoked.

 

2.  Clint Curtis, candidate for U.S. Representative, District 4, introduced himself by telling his history and stating his Democratic values. Clint was a “whistleblower” in Florida who recounted the 2000 Presidential Election and its crucial Fla. votes and testified before Congress.  He moved to CA to go to law school and is currently looking for a home in Dist. 4.  He has run for office in Fla.  Clint is pro-guns, pro-choice and in favor of the single payer health plan. Petitions in Lieu of Filing Fee forms were passed out to members to have signed and returned to Registrar of Voters’ office.

 

3.  Agenda was reviewed

4 - 5 No consent items were pulled.

 

November and January minutes were approved as corrected.  Move-Jim. Second-Frank

 

6.  Membership Report: 

  Judy Kildrow, MIT oceanography professor is interested in joining.

  Susan Pelican , who had been appointed Treasurer by the Eboard, was unanimously confirmed by the membership, Move Bill T, Second Gail A.

  Proposed  delegates to the CDC Convention in LA April 16 - 18 are Joan, Bill, Carol, Jim, Margie, Pat, Shanti, and Frank. 

  DCC nomination papers must be picked up from Registrar of Voters’ office at Rood Center and returned with at least 20 valid signatures by 3/12/10.

 

7.  Open Forum:

   Margie J and Shanti E. shared their experience at the Progressive Democrats of America meeting in Rocklin on 2/8/10.

  Susan P. and Shanti shared their observations of the progressive spiritual convocation held at USF on 2/15 on creating a caring community. 

  Other subjects--Gavin Newsom might be running for Lt. Gov.  80 % of Americans are against the recent Supreme Court decision naming corporations as people and removing campaign spending restraints.

 

8.  Old Business

  Assembly Dist. Endorsement & Region 1 meeting to be held 3/21 at Bear River High

  NCDCC Platform-2nd draft tabled until  next month

  The new NCDCC logo, selected by the Communications Committee, was shown and a straw pole concerning tee shirt designs was taken.

  Facebook.  Gail volunteered to set up DCC site and to monitor it daily.

  Next big event:  Every first Tuesday night of the month from 5:50 - 7:30, there will be a DCC sponsored event at the Holbrooke Hotel to engage the liberal community in conversation. 

  Precinct leaders:  Members are encouraged to use their Nomination Petitions to meet neighbors and also to bring Clint’s Petition in Lieu of Filing Fees and the CA Majority Rule Initiative Petitions.  There will be a get-together Sat. 3/6 at Diego’s at 4:00 pm to share experiences.  We are encouraged to develop of list of district activists.  Bill suggested that we have DCC business cards printed with our names and contact information.

  Possible new website--tabled

 

9.  New Business

  Privatizing the Library--members encouraged to express their opinions at next Supervisor’s meeting.  Resolution supporting the retention of county control of the libraries and their professional staffs was recommended.  Move Bill; 2nd Shanti unanimously passed

  New brochure.  Sharon has designed a new NCDCC brochure in full color with glossy paper. This project will cost around $225 from House of Print and Copy. 

  Home Show:  Jim suggested we set up a table with 3 shifts per day.  Cost $95.

  Treasurer’s Report: $4,615.30.  Accepted.  Move-Frank  2nd -Kent

  Appointment of Clint Curtis’s “point person”-Susan Pelican
