A RESOLUTION FOR THE NEVADA COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY

CALLING FOR THE LABELING OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS (GMOs)

BY THE NEVADA COUNTY LABELGMOS CAMPAIGN

WHEREAS, in 64 countries consumers have a right to receive accurate and thorough information about the products they buy, eat, and feed their families through clear and concise labeling of genetically engineered foods;and

WHEREAS, over the past two decades, U.S. public opinion polls have consistently shown overwhelming support for the labeling of genetically engineered foods;

WHEREAS, serious impacts in human and animal health and environmental degradation are being linked to GMOs through independent testing, although the FDA overrode the recommendations of its own scientists in 1992 by not requiring these foods be safety tested and labeled before marketing;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the Nevada County Democratic Party declares support for passing state and federal regulations requiring labeling of all foods that are developed through genetic engineering, or include genetically engineered ingredients, and are set at a threshold for contamination at no more than .9% as adopted by the EU standards; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED a copy of this resolution be sent to our State Senate and State Assembly Representatives, the Office of the Governor, the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, our United States Congressional Representatives, and the President of the United States.
